In the
1960 and the 1970’s women took off their feminine dresses and opted for a more
comfortable way to go about their day – wearing trousers. Traditionally,
trousers had been viewed by the western society as masculine however, women’s
fashion once again broke though the crazy idea of trousers being a no flex
zone, and wore them every day from narrow jeans, wide jeans and below the knee
type jeans. You name it, it came in every shape and size! Now, it is a high
trend with trousers and jeans being worn with a pair of converses and cup of
hot Starbucks in hand.
Men weren't any different though as artists like David Bowie and Prince championed
wearing feminine clothes and were (and still are) celebrated for their
individuality decades ago. Now, I feel as though people are starting to view people
who wear gender fluid clothes as a normal thing, and I think it is bloody time.
Vejas
Kruszewski is a New York based fashion designer who creates gender fluid
designs for his friends and celebrities like Beyoncé who absolutely adore his
designs. When it comes to his designs, Vejas represents his ideals in his model
casting sex, gender and racial diversity. His gender-fluid approach has
captured many hearts, but out of entire bunch of hearts stolen, mine wasn't stolen, it was given to him out of pure admiration and love.
Jaden
Smith is a great example of a celebrity that has broken gender boundaries as he
has become the new face of Louis Vuitton’s women's wear. Proud and happy, the
young star wore a pleated skirt, fringed vest and leather jacket while posing
alongside three female modes. I couldn't be more proud. The fact that a young
black male is doing something so outrageous (especially in the black community)
makes me feel as though we are beginning to grow as a society, as he feels that
he shouldn't be constrained by boundaries and people’s thoughts and opinions.
What
makes me even happier is the fact that there was so much positive feedback from
the younger audience. The response to Jaden’s LV shoot was very positive and
people applauded him for breaking gender stereotypes and being a part of the
gender fluid movement. I feel as though young youth like myself, are a lot more
accepting than those of the older generation, as we have grown up with people
being different and loving who they are.
Personally,
nobody should be condemned for wearing a particular type of clothing. We shouldn't let the media, bigots and ignorant people dictate to us how we wear
clothes, and what type’s clothes are acceptable for our gender. We should be
able to make our own choices and create our own identity as we are the future,
not clones of the past generation.
